When relationships leave lasting wounds

Experiences of emotional neglect, inconsistency, control, intimidation, or abuse can affect how you relate to yourself and others. You may question your own judgment, feel constantly on guard, or find it difficult to express your needs. Attachment wounds and domestic violence can overlap, but each person’s history is different. Counseling offers space to understand your experience without minimizing it or asking you to justify what happened.

Beginning with safety and choice

The first focus is on your current circumstances, your sense of stability, and the support you need now. You choose what to share and when to share it. Sessions can include tools for managing overwhelming emotions, recognizing boundaries, and identifying supportive people or resources. Counseling respects your autonomy, including the complexity of relationship decisions and the importance of considering your own safety.

Rebuilding self-trust and connection

As you feel ready, the work can explore relationship patterns, beliefs about yourself, and painful experiences that continue to affect daily life. Trauma-informed psychotherapy, EMDR, and somatic approaches may be integrated according to your goals and readiness. The aim is to support greater self-trust, clearer boundaries, and relationships in which your needs and choices have room. You do not have to tell your whole story in the first session.
